Young Roe buck

Watercolour

30 x 39 cm

This young roebuck was standing next to the road to Sörnyepuszta on a harvested corn field that had not yet been ploughed up. I just had time to get my utensils ready, sit down and paint this picture before the rain started and I had to pack everything up quickly.

Szürke gém a Rajna partján Bonn mellett, Németország, fineliner és akvarell

Grey heron on the riverbank

Fineliner and watercolour on watercolour paper

30 x 40 cm

I have always enjoyed sitting on the banks of the Rhine near Bonn. The mighty, leisurely flowing river has such a calming effect, ships sail up and down, the waves break softly on the beach and in front of me on the headlands jutting into the water, various species of birds gather, all living on and from the water. It was always a moment of relaxation for me and in the evening I went home with lots of memories and one or two sketches.

Great Grey Shrike on dry pasture

wax crayon

50 x 40 cm

During the autumn months, the great grey shrike comes to us from northern Europe and stays here over the winter months. It can be easily recognised by its characteristic plumage, also because it usually sits on a clearly visible lookout point and keeps an eye out for prey. When I painted this picture on location, it occurred to me to try something different and so a perhaps more modern-looking work was created.

Great grey shrike on a hawthorn bush

gouache

50 x 40 cm

In the winter months, the Great Grey Shrike can be found wherever the landscape structures and food supply are favourable. The white colour of its plumage shines from afar and reveals where it usually sits on the highest point of a bush and looks around for possible prey.

I painted this picture on the spot, always in a hurry, because you never know how long the great grey shrike will stay where it is.

Fehér présház Somogyszentpál, Somogy megye, pasztell kék papíron

White wine press house

Pastel on blue paper

40 x 50 cm

South of Lake Balaton lies the village of Somogyszentpál, which includes the suburban settlement of wine press houses. Some of them are still in good condition and are used by their owners. When I painted this house, the owners, a young couple, arrived. We struck up a conversation and they told me that they were planning to develop rural tourism here. They were pleased that I had chosen their house as a motif and I myself enjoyed the quiet beauty of this place.

Horse tamer bronze statue Budapest castle district, pencil and watercolour

Horse tamer bronze statue

Pencil and watercolour on drawing paper

36 x 48 cm

Until a few years ago, the statue of a horse tamer stood at the back of the former castle, now the National Gallery. When I was still living in Budapest, I liked to go to the castle hill, especially at weekends, just to stroll around or visit the National Gallery or to draw one of the statues there. I was particularly fascinated by this group and made several sketches of them.

Charcoal drawing

I love drawing and charcoal is one of my favourite techniques. It is predestined for the depiction of a dark, almost black wild boar because it allows for incredible nuances of light and dark.

Young rook high up in the crown of a pine tree

pencil and watercolour

60 x 42 cm

In the protected area there is also a pine forest with a large breeding colony of rooks. When I visited, the breeding season was practically over. The young birds practiced their flying skills, at first mainly in the treetops. From the sky and from the trees came the deafening noise of the perhaps several hundred birds. The strong smell of excrement was in the air and the ground was white from the droppings at the end of the breeding season. But I enjoyed this atmosphere and on the way home came the moment when, after leaving this place, I realized how loud it was there.

Old granary

Watercolour on yellow cardboard

50 x 70 cm

Opposite the castle in Somogyfajsz, which last belonged to the family of Count Kund, there is a large area on which only two old granaries still stand today. The property was freely accessible when I painted this picture. I was sitting under the poplar trees, in the crowns of which the oriole was singing and around me the nightingales were singing their beguiling song. Hoopoes nested in the other outbuildings and the courtyard was frequented by pigeons and sparrows. In short, those hours when I sat in the shade of the trees and painted were pure happiness for me. Today, just a few years later, there is nothing left of the charm of that place. So my painting already has a historical value.

Fight to the death

wax crayon and gouache on brown paper

36 x 47 cm (52 x 62 cm framed)

This picture was initially a wax crayon drawing. When it was finished, I had the idea of colouring it. Here is the result. I am inspired by the power and beauty of the leopard. It is able to kill a prey which is able to defend itself and whose size comes close to its own.

Big old granary near Barcs

Mixed media on yellow cardboard

50 x 70 cm

Next to the road leading from Kadarkút to Barcs is this beautiful granary and stable. When I spontaneously decided to stop to paint it, I was still able to enter the grounds. Today it is fenced off, so there is no longer any chance of wanting to repeat those moments. On this particular day, rain clouds rolled across the sky and when the sun had a chance, it made the buildings and sky glow in the most intense colours. I tried to capture this mood.
